The latest jab in the race for Illinois Treasurer involves a criticism of the Democratic nominee’s actions when he was involved in Champaign County politics. But, the Champaign County Administrator said at least some of the claims are not true.
Supporters of Republican Treasurer nominee Tom Cross spoke in Champaign Tuesday to highlight two alleged shortcomings of Democrat Mike Frerichs, who’s a Champaign Senator and former Champaign County Auditor.
The Cross campaign said an early retirement incentive program pushed by Frerichs in 2003 cost the county $3 million. Former county board member Stephanie Holderfield, a Republican, said that loss of funds had a tangible impact.
However, Champaign County Administrator Deb Busey said the retirement program was not Frerichs’ idea, and that it lost the county $350,000, not $3 million.
