Frerichs Unanimously Endorsed by the Illinois AFL-CIO. Only Statewide Candidate to Receive Early Endorsement
Chicago, IL. – The Illinois AFL-CIO today unanimously endorsed State Senator Mike Frerichs (D-Champaign) to be the next State Treasurer. Frerichs was the only statewide candidate to receive the endorsement of the 1,500-affiliate member organization, which collectively represents one million active members and retirees across Illinois.
Upon receiving the endorsement, Sen. Frerichs said, “I’m proud to stand with the Illinois AFL-CIO today just as I’ve stood with them and working families in Springfield. As the son of two union members, the opportunities my family was able to provide to me growing up was due in no small part to organized labor fighting for my family to have decent wages, healthcare, and stable jobs. I’ve never forgotten that and my personal history with Labor makes today’s endorsement even more special and humbling.”
Michael Carrigan, President of the Illinois AFL-CIO, said during the endorsement session, “Few candidates come before us with as solid of a commitment to working men and women of Illinois as Mike Frerichs. We proudly endorse him today so that he can be our champion in the Treasurer’s office, fighting for middle class families and wisely protecting their investments, every day.”
Dan Montgomery, President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers and Illinois AFL-CIO Executive Board Member, said, “I’ve gotten to know Mike Frerichs over the years as someone that my members can always count on to be a stalwart supporter for the issues we care about; be it his support for universal pre-K and kindergarten for all Illinois children, or constantly pushing for smart investments in our education and infrastructure systems. Mike is a champion for Illinois’ middle and working class families.”
Sen. Frerichs adds the Illinois AFL-CIO’s support to endorsements earlier this summer from the Cook County Democratic Party, the Southern 20 (a coalition of Democratic County Chairs from Southern Illinois), the Illinois Democratic County Chairmen’s Association, and most recently the Democratic Party of Illinois.
The Illinois AFL-CIO represents nearly 900,000 union members and is the voice of all working families in the state. Their power lies with the many and diverse people they represent in a multitude of workplaces and in their ability to affect change. To Learn more, visit, www.ilafl-cio.org
